The Hispanic Community – The following are some statistics collected from NIHHC’s survey-based data from health fairs during 2010-2013.
As one of the area’s largest minorities, Hispanics continue to be our target population. With the second largest percentage of Hispanics of any county in Indiana, Elkhart County’s population is expected to double over the next decade.
With this in mind, the NIHHC is committed to overcoming barriers in knowledge, transportation, and language to open healthcare access in addition to addressing the Hispanic community’s unique health concerns regarding:
- Cardiovascular disease/stroke – leading cause of death
- Female obesity – highest rate of any ethnic group
- Diabetes – twice as likely to develop diabetes compared to non-Hispanics
- Cervical cancer – 2.5 times higher rate than Caucasians
